A new construction era of bio-waste, bio-inspired digital meta-materials

Buildings exert significant environmental impact, contributing substantially to global energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, with a notable 30% and 19% share, respectively. Herein, the concept of Net-Zero Energy Buildings emerges as a paradigm shift in the construction sector.

A significant disparity, however, exists between state-of-the-art digital technologies and structures composed of sustainable materials.

The hashtag#PANTAREI project, funded within Horizon EIC Pathfinder Challenges 2023 framework, endeavours to pioneer an adaptive digital intelligent multi-scale strategy to design and assess novel bio-waste-derived meta-structures, with a primary focus on reducing embodied hashtag#CO2 in buildings. The overarching goal is to enhance current computational tools by integrating virtual physics of failure and non-equilibrium thermodynamics principles, enabling the development of adaptive solutions for sustainable bone-inspired meta-material design and realization, while maintaining a human-centered perspective. PANTAREI is coordinated by Politecnico di Milano, Prof. Laura vergani, and her team headed by Federica Buccino, together with other three academic and two industrial partners.
